¡Feliz Cumpleaños!

As I mentioned in the last post, yesterday was Alejandro's birthday.  We had a traditional birthday breakfast of tamales.  Later we went out to buy a birthday cake.  There are countless bakeries and pastry shops throughout the city, several which are within walking distance of Alejandro's house.  But the family really likes a place called "La Universal" which is a half-hour drive away.  So that is where we went.

On past occasions we have bought the "mil hojas" cake (made with something like strudel dough) and the "rompope" cake (the Mexican version of eggnog).  We wanted to get something different and decided on "pastel de durazno" (peach cake).

We took the cake home, and then we had to decide what we were going to have for Sunday afternoon dinner.  On Sundays the family usually goes somewhere for carryout or calls for delivery.  Alejandro and I walked a couple blocks away to a little restaurant that sells delicious "pambazos", a Mexican sandwich which I love and about which I've written previously on the blog.

We bought two kinds of "pambazos"... the traditional ones with chorizo sausage and potatoes, and others with "tinga de pollo", shredded chicken in a sauce of tomatoes, chipotles and onions.  I had one of each.

That evening, around 9:00, when a light supper is served in Mexico, we brought out the birthday cake to be served with hot chocolate.

The candle was lit, the lights turned off, and we sang both "Happy Birthday" and "Las Mañanitas", the traditional Mexican birthday song.  In the video you can hear one of the dogs joining along in the singing.

Alejandro had a happy day, and we all had too much good food.  I'm going to have to go on a diet this week!
