My regular readers know that on the first of each month I have been featuring the pictures from the calendar that I make every year. My 2023 calendar has photos that I took at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
August's picture, "Gray and Gold" by John Rogers Cox, is a depiction of an approaching summer thunderstorm.
Cox (1915-1990) was a painter from Terra Haute, Indiana, and this is one of his most famous works. The ominous storm clouds symbolize World War II, and the artist implies that U.S. democracy was at a crossroads as the nation confronted the spread of fascism.
