Saturday Night at the Movies

The media has been all abuzz about the movie "Barbie", but I have absolutely no desire to see it.  I wanted to see highly acclaimed biographical film "Oppenheimer".

Since it is over three hours long, Alejandro and I were thinking about going to a matinee on Sunday.  Neither one of us care for dubbed movies; we wanted to see it in the original English with Spanish subtitles.  We checked the schedule for a couple of movie theaters near Alejandro's house, and all of the showings there were dubbed in Spanish.  There was a theater at a mall farther away that was showing the original English version... but only in the evening.  So, we ended going on Saturday night at 8:00 P.M.  We invited Alejandro's good friend Eduardo to join us.  We picked up Eduardo and then made the 20-minute drive to "Plaza Aeropuerto", a small shopping mall which, as the name suggests, is not far from the airport.

The movie tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer who was in charge of the "Manhattan Project", the race to develop an atomic weapon before the Germans during World War II.  I thought that it was an excellent film and is worthy of dominating the field for the next Academy Awards.  It was a bit difficult to keep track of the many characters and follow the plot which jumps around in time.  However, I did not find the length of the movie to be a problem.  The last movie that I saw of that length was the second of Avatar movie.  With that film, after two hours, I was wondering when it was going to come to a conclusion.  I did not feel that way with "Oppenheimer".
It is not for someone who is looking for brainless, escapist entertainment, but if you prefer a thought provoking, intelligent movie, I highly recommend it.

  1. Oppenheimer is terrific, and so was Cillian Murphy in the title role. I'm glad it is a monster hit as well, for an R-rated historical drama not adapted from a comic book or video game. The "Barbenheimer" cross-film marketing gimmick will be studied in film schools for years.
