Up to this point I have been staying at the home of Alejandro's family, but this past weekend he and I had the chance to stay at the apartment that I am in the process of buying. On Saturday morning we headed out for breakfast. Usually on the weekend, "El Cardenal", one of our favorite restaurants, has a long line waiting for a table. But we left the apartment early, and as we passed "El Cardenal", we saw that there was no line at all. So, we changed plans and took the opportunity to have breakfast there. We were seated immediately and had one of the outdoor tables.
We started, as we always do there, with their Mexican hot chocolate, and "pan dulce", sweet bread. Their baked goods are scrumptious!
Alejandro had a "huazontle" omelet, something that I have ordered there before (and I might have even written about it the blog). "Huazontle" is a Mexican plant which is sometimes called "Aztec broccoli". Also, notice the basket of freshly baked "bolillos", the Mexican rolls which are like miniature baguettes. I think that "El Cardenal" has the best "bolillos" in the city.
I also ordered something that I have had there before, "gorditas hidalguenses". "Gorditas" are little fried cakes made of corn flour dough with a savory filling. In this recipe from the state of Hidalgo, the "gorditas" are covered with a green sauce and crumbled cheese.
As always, we left "El Cardenal" very full and very satisfied. As they say in Mexico, "Barriga llena, corazón contento" (Full belly, happy heart).
