June Snow in Mexico City?

Every once in a while, Mexico City is hit with a freak hailstorm.  The hail accumulates to the point where it looks as if the city is covered in snow.  One such storm occurred yesterday.  These photos are taken from Twitter...

The weight of the hail caused the roof of the Mega-Soriana supermarket (pictured above) to collapse.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.  You can also watch a short YouTube video of the event HERE.

Alejandro told me last night that in his neighborhood there was only rain.  However, the supermarket collapse occurred in the neighborhood of Mixcoac, just a half-hour walk to the south of the apartment where I stay.  I hope all is well there.

    1. From what I read there was only one injury in the roof collapse. This kind of freak hailstorm seems to be occurring more frequently in Mexico City. Just last year there was a hailstorm which caused the collapse of a metal roof protecting a portion of the ruins of the Aztec temple in the center of the city.
