Neighborhood Eats

Today Alejandro, his father and I went to a little neighborhood diner to eat.  The place has been there for years.  Alejandro can remember going there as a boy with his mom and aunt.

There is not much of a variety on the menu... just "flautas" and "tortas".  "Flautas" (flutes) are tortillas rolled up around fillings such as shredded chicken, ham or diced potatoes, and then fried to a crisp. They are topped with cheese, sour cream, onions and avocado.  That is what Alejandro ordered.  "Tortas" are the traditional Mexican sandwich on a large roll and they offered a wide range of different kinds.  His dad and I both ordered the "torta suiza" (Swiss torta) which contained sausage, ham, three different kinds of cheese, avocado,  tomato and just enough jalapeño peppers to give it a little kick.

The place may be a hole-in-the-wall, but my "torta" was absolutely delicious.  I hope we go there again.
