Volcano Check

It's been a while since I have taken a look at the Webcams de México website and checked on Popocatépetl, the volcano outside of Mexico City.   It is still the rainy season in Mexico, and precipitation at that altitude generally falls as snow.  However, as you can see in the photo, the mountain is currently devoid of snow.

Due to increased volcanic activity and global climate change, the glaciers on Popo´s slopes completely disappeared by 2001.  A couple of weeks ago, just after the recent earthquakes, there was a warning issued for volcanic ash in Mexico City, but, according to Alejandro, nothing happened.  I do remember, many years ago, when Popo first emerged from years of quiescence, that ash fell on the city of Puebla.  The cars parked on the street all had what appeared to be a fine layer of dust on them.  It was volcanic ash.

Mexico's highest mountain, Pico de Orizaba, still has snow and ice at its summit.

Orizaba has nine glaciers, including the largest glacier in Mexico, "el Gran Glaciar Norte".
