The Sound of Mexico City

I know that I have done a post about this before, but I could not resist taking another video featuring one of the most unique and characteristic sounds of Mexico City.  It is a sound that you will hear every day, probably several times a day.  It is the recording played by the junk men who go up and down the streets in their trucks buying old appliances and other metal objects.

The recording was originally taped in 2005 by a young girl at the request of her father, a scrap metal dealer.  It is now used by the metal dealers all over the city.  The sing-song chant is irritating to some, endearing to others, but it is without a doubt an iconic sound of Mexico City.  While Alejandro and I were dining outdoors at "Angelopolitano", one of the trucks passed by, and I recorded it.

Loosely translated the recording says...

We buy

mattresses,

bed frames,

refrigerators,

stoves,

microwave ovens,

and anything of old metal that you have to sell.

A couple other things to notice in the video...

You will briefly see the brand new, blue street cars that have replaced that old ones since I was last there.  And you will also see and hear a street musician playing the saxophone.  They usually play outside restaurants hoping for a few coins from the customers.  I am surprised that he did not cross the street and play for us.
