The Parade of "Alebrijes"

The first big event of the Day of the Dead season is the "Desfile de Alebrijes Monumentales"... the Parade of Monumental "Alebrijes".  If you have read this blog for a while, you know that "alebrijes" are figures of colorful, fantastical animals.  Each year, for the last seventeen years, the Museum of Popular Arts has sponsored this parade.  It features large "alebrijes" made of papier maché which are created by local arts and cultural organizations as well as individual artists.  The parade has grown over the years, and now includes more than 200 "alebrijes" as well as marching bands, drum and bugle corps, dancers, and people dressed in colorful costumes.

Alejandro and I always look forward to this event, and this year we were joined by our friends Al and Stew who traveled from San Miguel de Allende to see the parade for the first time.  We usually find a shady spot along Juárez Avenue.  However, we were a bit delayed in leaving the apartment, and the streets along the parade route had already been closed to traffic.  Our Uber dropped us off, and we walked a couple blocks to a spot along Paseo de la Reforma.  We had a front row view.  Unlike the Day of the Dead Parade, which attracts millions of people, you do not have to arrive hours ahead of time to find a good place to see the event.  Fortunately it was a cloudy day, because our spot offered no shade at all.  A few drops of rain fell on us for a couple of minutes, but it never developed into anything heavier.

So, here are some photos and videos from the parade...

More from the "alebrije" parade in the next post...
