After doing some shopping at "Nuevo Mundo" department store on Saturday, we crossed the street to the downtown flagship of Mexico City's high end department store, "El Palacio de Hierro". We didn't go there to buy anything; just to look around. The prices at "Palacio" are exorbitant, even when there is a sale.
As it turned out there were having their "Day of the Dead" sale that weekend.
The downtown store, which opened in 1921, was built in art nouveau style imitating the department stores of Paris. The ceiling of the building is of stained glass.
The store was decorated for the Day of the Dead sale, and here Alejandro is chatting with a couple of "catrinas".
After about an hour of wandering around and looking at the price tags of merchandise, we left empty-handed... well, except for our bag of purchases from thoroughly middle-class "Nuevo Mundo".

Love that stained glass ceiling. I don't think I've ever been inside this building.

It's similar to the stained glass roof of the Gran Hotel, which also began as a department store.
