Since moving to Mexico City, each October I have set up a fairly elaborate "ofrenda", an altar in memory of departed friends and family members. This year, I set it up a bit early (Day of the Dead does not fall until November 2nd), so that our house guests Al and Stew could see it when they stayed with us last weekend.
Sadly, there was another person to add to the "ofrenda" this year. You may remember that a former teaching colleague and dear friend, Carol, passed away while we were in Ohio last month. Her late husband, Gary, was like an older brother to me, and his photo was already on the altar. However, I found a photo of the two of them, so they are now together on the "ofrenda".
I hope that by next year there is no one else to add to the "ofrenda".
