The supermarkets, such as Walmart, begin selling "pan de muerto", the traditional bread for the Day of the Dead season as early as the beginning of September. However, I always say, "I'm not having any 'pan de muerto' at least until October!"
Yesterday, we went to one of our usual restaurants for breakfast. Before taking your order, they always come around with a tray of sweet bread. They had "bread of the dead" on the tray, so I decided to have one, my first of the season.
It is a sweet, soft bread shaped like a bun and decorated with crossbones of dough and sprinkled with sugar. It is often is flavored with orange water. This restaurant does its own baking, and their "pan de muerto", like their other baked goods, is very good. I guess that I can now say that for me the Day of the Dead season has officially begun.
