After the ceremony at Ezra's school to mark the closing of the school year, we went out for breakfast at a restaurant not far from where Alejandro's family lives. The place is called "Conejo" (Rabbit). Although the restaurant has been around for a number of years, this was only the second time I had been there.
Their sign says "Cocina del corazón" (kitchen of the heart), and their breakfasts are truly outstanding. From what I could see of the kitchen, there is one chef preparing the orders. The meals come to the table as he finishes each dish.
This little restaurant is every bit as good as any of our usual breakfast favorites. If it were in a more tourist-oriented neighborhood it would be a hit... but if it were in a different part of town, the prices would be more expensive. As it is, the place is crowded with locals. I was the only "gringo" there.
Ezra ordered the "molletes yucatecos". A "mollete" is a type of open-faced sandwich on a roll split lengthwise. Usually they have refried beans and cheese. In this case they were covered with "cochinita pibil", Yucatecan-style pulled pork, red onions and avocado.
Sandra had the enchiladas covered with "mole poblano".
Alejandro ordered a "chapata de arrachera", a sandwich on ciabatta bread filled with Mexican skirt steak.
I had enchiladas covered with Oaxacan "mole". The "mole" was superb, as good as any that I have had in Oaxaca.
The breakfasts include coffee (with refills), and small bowl of fruit, and a plate of sweet breads from the excellent bakery next-door.
The bill for the four of us was 728 pesos... around 38 dollars. An excellent breakfast at a great price!
