This afternoon, as I passed by the nearby branch of El Cardenal, one of our favorite restaurants, I saw this sign...
"We begin the season of "chiles en nogada" starting on July 16th."
If you have read this blog for any length of time, you know that I consider "chiles en nogada" to be the masterpiece of Mexican cuisine. Although there are a few restaurants that serve it all year long, for the most part, the dish is served in the months of August and September when fresh walnuts and pomegranates are in season. Its colors... the green poblano pepper, the white walnut sauce, and the red pomegranate seeds... are the colors of the Mexican flag. Thus, it is traditional for Mexican Independence Day (September 16th).
I just looked at the website of another one of our favorite restaurants, Testal, and it has already begun serving "chiles en nogada". Angelopolitano, which used to be our #1 favorite, is one of the few places that serve the dish all year long. They started going downhill and eventually closed. However they have reopened in a new location. We really should give them another try, and see if they are back to their former quality when they had the best "chiles en nogada" in town.
I have a feeling that these months are not going to be good for my waistline!
