A Cautionary Tale

This is a true story that was related to Alejandro by an acquaintance who is a relative of one of the two people involved.  I don't know their names, but for the sake of the story, let's call them Pablo and José.  Pablo and José are friends and colleagues who work for a large company in Mexico City.   The two of them had to travel out of town on a business trip.  Pablo made arrangements to stay at an Airbnb apartment upon his return instead of going home to his family at the end of the business trip.  José scoffed that his friend was being overly cautious.  When their trip was over, José went home to his family, but Pablo went to the apartment that he had rented.

A few days later, both of them displayed mild symptoms of Covid19.  They were tested, and they were both positive.  Not only that, but everyone in José's household tested positive, including his grandmother.  Some days later she died of Covid19.  Pablo remains in quarantine in the apartment.  His sister brings him meals which she leaves at the door.  José is suffering from depression, racked by the guilt of having caused the premature death of his grandmother.

Unfortunately, this is one of many sad tales occurring in Mexico and around the world when people do not take the pandemic seriously.

  1. The stats will be terrible in the US after the Labor day weekend. Many friends have posted gatherins of family and friends on FB. NO ONE has had a mask on in public places and, of course NO social distancing. Hard to believe!
I'm sad for the man who didn't take precautions. Someone got irritated at me when they arrived in SMA and I heartily suggested that that person follow the requested quarantine by staying home and having things delivered. Your story is a good example of "Why".

    1. It's very sad that so many people simply do not take the necessary precautions. Between Labor Day and the reopening of some schools experts are predicting a very grim September. And with the coming flu season exacerbating the situation the death toll by the end of the year could be enormous. During the pandemic of 1918 there were many people who refused to wear masks. but, sadly, people do not learn from history.
