A Walk in the Garden

It had been quite a while since I had visited the botanical garden in Chapultepec Park.  It is by no means one of the great gardens of the world.  In fact, the Botanical Garden in my home town of Cleveland is far superior.  However, it is a pleasant place to take a stroll.  My biggest complaint is that many of the plants in the garden are not identified.

As one might expect, there is a variety of agaves and cacti native to Mexico.

The "nopal" or prickly pear cactus which appears on Mexico's coat of arms

However, Mexico's geography is very diverse.  There is a lot more to the country than deserts and semi-arid regions where cacti thrive.

Banana plants
Did you know that the banana is not a tree, but is the world's largest herbaceous flowering plant?

The "ahuehuete" or Montezuma cypress is the national tree of Mexico.

 Water lilies

I know day lilies when I see them.  I had loads of them in my garden back in Ohio.

A pretty but unidentified flower

I recognized the flowers of this plant.  It's a lantana.
Back in Ohio it's a small annual, but here it's a perennial that grows into large bush.

I went inside the botanical garden's conservatory.

I knew that the plant to the bottom was a bromeliad, but I believe that the one above it is another variety of bromeliad.

Bird of Paradise

There were a lot of orchids in the conservatory, but only a few of them were blooming.

This orchid blossom was at the end of a stalk that was several feet long.
