November's Photo

I will take a brief break from writing about the Day of the Dead, and, as is usual on the first of each month, I will show you November's photo from my custom-made calendar.

The theme of this year's calendar is Mexican archaeological sites.  La Cantona, although it is relatively unknown to visitors and Mexicans alike, it is one of the largest sites in the country.  The city covered an area of over four square miles and only about 10% of it has been excavated.  When the great city of Teotihuacan fell into decline, La Cantona filled the vacuum and became a major trading center.  At its height between the 6th and 10th centuries, it probably had a population of 80,000 people.  The city had 24 ball courts, more than any other archaeological site in Mexico.  The remains of over 3000 residential complexes have been excavated.

Alejandro and I visited La Cantona in 2012, and we were incredibly impressed.  The ruins seemed to extend forever, and we had the site almost to ourselves.

  1. Looks neat! I hadn't heard of La Catona prior to reading your post. I see from your pic that it's in Puebla state. Is it doable as a daytrip from CDMX?

    1. We did it as a really long day trip from CDMX... maybe about 3.5 hours to get there. The problem is that you really need a car to get there. It's in the middle of nowhere, and there is no public transportation. It is, however, a fantastic place.
