I know that the Day of the Dead is over, but it is a season so filled with sights and events, that I probably still have a week's worth of blog entries to write.
Along the Paseo de la Reforma, the Hotel Marquis Reforma has had very impressive displays for the holiday in the past. This year was no exception.
The theme of this year's display was sports stars that have passed away. I had no idea who the race car driver was, but the doorman informed that it was a figure of Brazilian Ayrton Senna.
I had never heard of him before, but I looked him up. He was considered one of the best racers in the world, and he died at the age of 34 when his car crashed in a race in Italy in 1994.
Another figure represented the Argentinian soccer superstar Diego Maradona (1960-2020).
What many casual observers may not have noticed is that the decoration on these figures was created by artisans from the Huichol tribe and crafted from thousands upon thousands of colored beads.
This figure represents famed baseball player, Babe Ruth (1895-1948).
This figure portrayed Mexican baseball player Roberto Avila (1924-2004), known as Bobby Avila in the United States. He was the first Mexican player to gain success in Major League Baseball in the U.S.
I am familiar with Avila because he gained fame playing for my hometown team of the Cleveland Indians.
Amazing bead work on these figures - thank you for posting them!
ReplyDeleteThe amount of work that goes into these beaded designs is incredible.
