Another Sunday in Mérida

This Sunday Jane had the chance to experience the festive atmosphere of Sunday in the "centro histórico" of Mérida.

We both had "chilaquiles" for breakfast at Café La Habana.  We then explored the main plaza with its many stalls selling handicrafts and clothing.  We both bought a number of items.  (Jane bought a bottle of X'tabentun, the Yucatecan honey liqueur that she likes so much.)

We continued up Calle 60 to La Plaza de la Maternidad where we were tempted by the displays of local artists.  I gave in to temptation and bought a cute, hand-painted, kitchen still-life.  (I think I have a place in the kitchen where I can hang it.)

Then we saw the display of a local photographer, Jorge Reyes, who still uses film and develops his photos in a dark room.  His subject matter is primarily Mayan ruins and colonial buildings.  I couldn't resist.  I don't know where I am going to put it, but I bought one of his photos.

We walked on to the Plaza de Santa Lucía where a band was playing and couples were dancing.  (Yes, that's a Dairy Queen in the background.)

That evening we returned to the "centro" for dinner again at our favorite restaurant, Amaro.  The place was packed, and Enrique, wasn't able to wait on us.  He did, however, pose for a photo with us.

After dinner we strolled to the main plaza where a lively concert of Latin music was underway.  Then, in what has become a ritual, we went back to the café next to the Peón Contreras Theater to listen to the music there and enjoy a nightcap of X'tabentún.
