Looking for an Apartment?

If you are thinking about moving to Mexico City, there are a bunch of apartment buildings nearing completion in my neighborhood.  Real estate prices have gone up a lot here.  They may seem like an incredible bargain for someone moving from New York City or California, but not so much for someone coming from an affordable housing market such as my hometown of Cleveland.   I'm grateful for the price I paid for my roomy, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo.  I was able to find prices for some of these new buildings, and the apartments are either much smaller, or the cost is much higher, or both.

Anyway, here are some new buildings just a short distance from where I live...

This apartment building (it actually consists of three towers) is called Blendhaus.  (How do they come up with some of these names?)  It has been under construction for quite a while, but it finally appears to be nearly ready for occupancy.  The windows have been put in, and the building has been connected to the electricity.  Their cheapest, and smallest, apartments run for 216,000 US dollars.  Their largest (which is still not as big as mine) costs 492,000 US dollars... a LOT more than what I paid for my place.

Right across the street is another new building.  They are putting the finishing touches on it, and it was constructed much more quickly than the Blendhaus.
I think it has a lot more style in its exterior design.  They have even planted plants in the flowerboxes on the balconies.

The apartments cost 237,000 US dollars, but they are all considerably smaller than mine.

Construction began recently on this small apartment building.  It only has six apartments, and, according to the sign. only one remains unsold.  When I first started renting in Colonia Nápoles, there was a colonial-style house here, the kind of home which predominated back when this neighborhood was first developed in the early 1930s and 40s.  The house had been converted into a restaurant called Fonda Don Tacho. and it served an inexpensive afternoon menu of the day.  It was the first restaurant where I ate when I came to Nápoles.  The restaurant closed a while ago, and the house was torn down for the construction of this apartment building.

Finally, this apartment building, called "Alure" has been under construction for some time, but it is progressing upwards.  When completed it will be 20 stories high and have 91 apartments.  A two bedroom apartment will cost 280,000 US dollars.

Although the building is far from complete (it appears to have only reached about half its eventual height), most of the barriers around the construction site have been removed.  You can look through the window and see that the lobby has already been furnished, perhaps to serve as a sales office.

You can look through a glass barrier and see the excavation work for the underground parking garage.
The former owner of my condo told me that the building was built on bedrock.  Seeing the boulders down there, it seems that yes, indeed, Colonia Nápoles is built upon a firm footing.

  1. Funnily enough I do need a CDMX apartment! And they look nice. But my needs are just for the three nights in July, so Booking.com/Airbnb will be my port of call. But if you’re about and circumstances allow, we’re overdue a coffee I believe….

  2. Great! We must definitely get together when you are in town. Fortunately, I will be here in July. Much of June I will be in Ohio. I have your email address so we can be in contact, and make plans!
