Alejandro and I did not observe Good Friday in a religious manner. Instead we went furniture shopping.
There is piece of furniture in the guest bedroom that I have wanted to replace for a long time. I don't know exactly what you would call it... a dresser without a mirror?... a credenza?
The previous owner had glued a television set onto the top of it (perhaps fearing that the TV would topple over if there were an earthquake). The top was a sticky mess. When I moved in permanently, I sanded it down to get rid of the stickiness, and then covered the unsightly top with a table runner.
During most of Holy Week and even a couple days after Easter, the World Trade Center is holding its annual "Expo Muebles" (Furniture Expo). We went to the exposition last year, and I saw a couple of pieces that would be a good replacement. However, since we were set to leave on a trip to Ohio in a few days, I didn't want to buy anything. "Next year," I had said. Alejandro did not have to work on Good Friday, so we decided to go to the World Trade Center.
I took the measurements of the old piece of furniture beforehand, and we walked through the entire expo. We found three or four possibilities. The fourth one had a mirror attached, but the saleslady said we could detach the mirror and hang it somewhere else. I said to Alejandro, "We don't have anyplace to put a mirror." He joked, "We could hang it on the ceiling above the bed in the guest bedroom." We went back through the entire show and compared the possibilities. When I did the measurements, I had forgotten to measure the height. So, we had to judge that by sight. We finally decided on this piece.
So, I have a new piece of furniture ordered. Now we have to get rid of the old piece. I'll ask my cleaning lady and the doorman if they would be interested in taking it. If not, I can sell it to the junk dealers who go up and down the streets on a regular basis.
Whether you are observing the holiday in a traditional fashion or not, I wish you a happy Easter!
