Protests and marches are a common occurrence in Mexico City. Unfortunately, ugly barricades are placed around historic monuments to protect them from vandalism by protestors. The barricades are soon covered in graffiti, making them even uglier.
So, it was a pleasant surprise today when I saw the Juárez Monument, which honors the nation's most revered President, free of its barriers. There were, however, two policewomen keeping watch over the gleaming, white marble monument.
Perhaps the city government thought that, since it is Holy Week, there will be no protests. Or perhaps they wanted to make the city more attractive for the Mexican tourists who visit the capital this time of year.
