Remembrance

Before leaving the topic of the Day of the Dead, I should post one last somber entry.  In spite of the smiles that this year's festivities brought, one should not forget that the events were dedicated to the victims and heroes of September's earthquake.

On our way back from the Ballet Folklórico on Thursday evening, we passed through the Condesa neighborhood.  Alejandro had not been there since the earthquake, and he was very distressed to see the damage.

We came to the large building on Alvaro Obregón Avenue which had collapsed.  The rubble appears to have been hauled away now, but that section of the street is still closed to traffic.  Next to the barricade on the sidewalk, a candle-lit "ofrenda" had been set up in memory of those who died there.

"In memory of the 49 deceased in the earthquake of the 19th of September, 2017,
at 1:34 P.M. in the building of Alvaro Obregón 286, Colonia Condesa, Mexico City"

The names of 38 victims are listed; 11 bodies were unidentified.

Descansen en paz.
