The year is drawing to a close as we turn the calendar to November. This is the piece of Mexican art that I chose for my calendar.
November 20th is Revolution Day, commemorating the beginning of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. (In order to have a three-day weekend, it will be observed on Monday, October 18th this year.) The Zapatistas were the followers of Emiliano Zapata, the revolutionary hero who fought for the distribution of land to the peasants. The painting is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, but I took a photo of it when it was on exhibition in Mexico City.
The painter, José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949) was one of the "Big Three" of Mexican muralism. (The other two being Diego Rivera and José Alfaro Siqueiros.)
