A Downpour

I mentioned in an earlier post that the rainy season is upon us.  Yesterday certainly proved that point.  Downgraded Tropical Storm Alvin, far off in the Pacific, dumped a bunch of rain on us.

When we left for the National Auditorium to see "The Barber of Seville", the sun was shining brightly.  Fortunately we had the good sense to take umbrellas with us.  When we left the auditorium it was cloudy.  When we got off the subway at the station nearest to the apartment it was starting to rain.  We had barely walked a block when the heavens opened.  We ducked under the overhang of a building and thought that we could wait out the worst of it.

After waiting for at least twenty minutes, the rain was not letting up.  So we continued on, and even with our umbrellas, we were getting soaking wet.  We stopped in at a café that we like called St. Peter's Coffee.  We were just going to hang out for a while and have something to drink.  However, since the rain was continuing unabated, we decided we might as well have our dinner there too.  While eating, we watched the news on the TV.  There were live reports on the heavy rain on the Pacific coast, in Mexico City, Puebla, and even in the state of Veracruz, which is on the opposite side of the nation from the Pacific.  Alvin may not have been a fierce hurricane, but it certainly packed a heavy wallop of rain.

I ordered the "St. Peter's Torta", which is described on the menu as having as have "a little bit of everything".  It reminded me of a restaurant chain in Ohio called "Max and Erma's" which is known for its "garbage burger" which has everything that you would conceivably put on a burger.  This "torta" was enormous with ham, chicken cutlet, sausage, cheese, tomato, onion, and more.  It was definitely the kind of sandwich that you have to use a knife and fork.

I am the kind of person who cleans my plate, but there was no way I could eat all of it.  I had them put half of it in a box to take home.

After we finished our meal, the rain was still coming down.  Alejandro ordered another cappuccino, and I had another hot chocolate.  Finally, after a couple of hours, the rain finally abated to a sprinkle, and we made our way back to the apartment.
