Today is the Feast of Candelaria, a day when it is traditional to serve tamales.
During this time of year, one of our favorite restaurants, El Cardenal, features a special breakfast menu with several types of tamales. We rarely make it to El Cardenal for breakfast on weekends because if you do not arrive early, there is a long, long line waiting for a table.
This weekend we were going to take a road trip, and we wanted to get an early start. So we were at the restaurant shortly after it opened at 8:00. Of course, we ordered from the Candelaria menu inserted within the regular menu.
They had three types of tamales... chicken with green sauce, Manchego cheese with strips of poblano peppers, and "mole" with pork. We were both little piggies (I don't worry about my diet on weekends), and we both ordered one of each.
For this season they also have guava "atole". "Atole" is a hot beverage made from corn that comes in different flavors. I have tried it in several flavors, and I really don't care much for it... not even chocolate "atole". However, for some reason, I really like the guava flavor, so we both ordered it. As you see, it comes in little, clay mugs.
It was a really delicious breakfast to begin the holiday weekend!
