In a colonial building behind the National Palace is another one of Mexico City's many museums.
Prior to 1964 when the National Museum of Anthropology was opened in Chapultepec Park, this building housed archaeological treasures from Mexico's pre-Hispanic past. When that collection was moved to its new home, it became the National Museum of Cultures, dedicated to the cultures, past and present, of other countries. The museum is, I suppose, a very good learning experience for students. But most of its contents are simply replicas of original works from civilizations such as ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome.
However, there have been some good special exhibits here. So last month when I saw banners advertising an exhibit on the "Ancient Treasures of Bulgaria", I went inside. It turned out to be a disappointment. The exhibit included a couple of gold objects unearthed at archaeological sites in Bulgaria.
But most of the exhibit consisted of nothing more than posters showing ancient gold and silver objects housed in museums in Bulgaria.
