Another Woman Artist

The other special show that I saw last month at the San Carlos Museum was an exhibit of works by Aurora Reyes (1908 - 1985).  She was the first woman to do mural paintings in Mexico.  She was also an outspoken supporter of women's suffrage and equal rights.  As a youth, she was a classmate with Frida Kahlo at the National Preparatory School, and they remained friends throughout their lives.  In spite of her accomplishments, she was almost forgotten by the time of her death.  This exhibit showcases her important role in the world of Mexican art.

"The First Landscape" 1953

"Peasant Woman with Baby" 1930

"Woman of the Town" 1932

"Sick Child" 1936

"Face of Emiliano Zapata" 1950

"Peasant Protest" 1935

"Face of Isabel Villaseñor" 1935

"Profile of a Woman" 1950

"The Golden Bride"

A sketch for her mural "Attack on the Rural Teachers" which in 1936 was the first Mexican mural painting to be done by a woman.

Here is a picture from the internet of the mural.  I was done for the entrance to a school, "Centro Escolar Revolucionario" in Mexico City.  The building is still used as a school, and, as far as I can tell, is not open to the general public.

As you can see from these exhibits, as well as others that I have written about earlier, Frida Kahlo was most definitely not the only important female artist in the world of Mexican art.
