A Saturday Night Out

Last Saturday evening we decided to go out to see a movie at the World Trade Center Cinema.  It was raining lightly when we left the apartment, but we had brought our umbrellas.  Then as we approached the World Trade Center, it suddenly began raining cats and dogs.  No, cats and dogs is an understatement.  With the wind whipping our umbrellas, it was like a mini-hurricane.  In the short distance we had to walk, our pants and shoes were soaked.  Alejandro wanted to go back to the apartment, but I said, "No, we're here. Let's go to the movie."

We were glad that we did not turn back, because the movie we saw was excellent.  In Spanish, the film was called "Siempre Juntos" (Always Together) but its English title was "Ezra"

The film tells the story of the conflict between a father and mother over how to raise their autistic son, Ezra.  William Fitzgerald, the young actor who plays the role of Ezra, is himself autistic, and his performance was stellar.

During the movie we could hear the rain pounding on the roof, but by the time we left the theater the rain had stopped.  The street next to the World Trade Center was once again a lake.  We had not yet had supper, but first we went back to the apartment to change our clothes which were still wet.

I have written several times about our new favorite restaurant, Testal, but I don't think I have written about our favorite Italian restaurant, Mangiatore.  It is located a short walk from the apartment on the other side of Insurgentes Avenue.

The photo on the cover of the menu is very comical, but the restaurant is very serious about using top quality ingredients for their food.

This was our third or fourth time at Mangiatore, and each time our meals have been excellent.  We usually don't order wine with our meal, but this time we ordered a pitcher of clericot, a popular Mexican beverage similar to sangría from Spain.  It is made with red wine, sparkling water, lemon soda and fruit (usually apples).

Alejandro started with a soup called "crema Marta", a cream soup made with three different cheeses, mozzarella, gorgonzola, and parmesan.

I opted for the less cholesterol-laden minestrone soup.

Alejandro ordered the special calzone, and as you see, it was humungous.  It was filled with mascarpone sauce, fresh mozzarella, provolone, bacon, olives and tomatoes.

I had the "lasagna Mangiatore" which was equally rich.  The homemade pasta was filled with spinach, nuts, ricotta cheese, ham and beef "a la bolognesa", and was covered in a white sauce and Grana Padano parmesan.  It was decadently delicious.

There is an old Mexican saying... "Barriga llena, corazón contento." (Full belly, happy heart.)
We were definitely full, and definitely happy, although our hearts may not have been so happy about all that cholesterol!
