On Sunday, Alejandro and I went to Mexico City's "Historic Center". We visited the colonial mansion known as Iturbide's Palace. The building is the headquarters of the Cultural Foundation of Banamex (the Bank of Mexico). Numerous free exhibits are held here each year, and I have written about many of them here. There are a couple of exhibits going on right now, and, in addition there is an enormous "ofrenda" for the Day of the Dead. The Cultural Foundation has long sponsored masters of Mexican popular arts, and the photographs above the altar honor artists who have passed away.
There were a couple of other groupings of Day of the Dead figures created by Mexican artists.
In the center is the traditional "catrina", the elegantly dressed skeleton with her big hat and a "feathered serpent" boa.
I have seen this humorous group of clay figures on display previously. It depicts a funeral, and everyone in attendance is a skeleton.
More from Iturbide's Palace in the next posts...
