Last week I made a trip downtown. On the Zócalo, Mexico City's main plaza, workers were still putting up Christmas lights. The lights are always put up on two sides of the square... on the south on the twin buildings of the city hall, and on the hotels and businesses on the west side. The motif of this year's decorations is giant piñatas and poinsettias.
Meanwhile, on the south side of the Zócalo, 20 de Noviembre Avenue, which runs into the plaza, was blocked off while they worked on the decorations which will hang over the street.
I don't know what the plans are for the Zócalo for this holiday season. Last year they had a Christmas fair that included a stage for concerts, several large Christmas trees made of poinsettia plants, and a handicraft market. I looked at the webcam of the plaza this morning, and they have erected a couple of large tents. Hopefully, Alejandro and I will have a chance to go downtown one weekend evening to see the display.
