Nativity Scenes

Last week I went to the 18th century mansion known as Iturbide's Palace.  The colonial building is the headquarters of the cultural foundation of Banamex (National Bank of Mexico).  I have written many times about the free exhibits that are held here.  At this time of year, they usually have an exhibit of Nativity scenes (nacimientos) created by Mexican artists in a variety of mediums.

As you enter the courtyard, you see a the same large display of metal angels that was there last year.

I recognized some of the scenes from last year's exhibition, but I took photos of Nativities that I did not remember.  However, after comparing my pictures with those that I posted last year, I think that the show is largely the same as in 2023.  There are probably a couple hundred Nativity scenes in the show, and I did not come close to posting pictures of all of them last year.  So here are some more that did not appear on the blog previously.  And you can also read about the 2023 show HERE and HERE.

These pictures from the city of Monterey are created from birds' feathers pasted onto bark paper.

These Nativity figures, modeled from clay, come from the state of Guerrero.

These Nativity scenes, also made of clay, are from the state of Veracruz.

This Nativity is done in the green pottery from the town of Santa María Atzompa in the state of Oaxaca.

This picture made from yarn glued to a wooden board is an example of the art of the Huichol people of western Mexico.

More Nativity scenes in the next post...

  1. It was interesting to see the arte de plume at the beginning. It is definitely an art that you seldom see anymore. I used to have a large collection but sold it all about seven years. ago

    1. And it has its Mexican origins in pre-Hispanic times.
