Ezra, Alejandro's (and my) nephew is in the third year of "secundaria"... the equivalent of ninth grade in junior high school. Each December, his school puts on a "Christmas Festival". Usually the program is held on a weekend afternoon in a government run theater. But this year, because of bureaucracy in scheduling, the only date that the school could get was a weekday evening. I usually spend Sunday and Monday nights at the family house, but when the "Festival" was scheduled for Tuesday, "Uncle Bill" stayed over an extra night to attend the show.
Alejandro's sister Sandra took this selfie of the three of us while we waited for the show to begin.
There was a dramatic presentation that was a very loose adaptation of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". The school's dance and instrumental workshops each performed a number.
The choirs of each grade performed a song. The first year (seventh grade) did a song in another language. We wondered if it were an African Christmas song.
The second year (eighth grade) performed "The Carol of the Bells" in English.
Ezra's class, the ninth graders, did not do a Christmas song, but rather a popular standard from the 1950s, "Fly Me to the Moon". They too sang in English.
After the show, Sandra said to her son that she hopes he is enjoying the experience of performing with his classmates, because next year when he is in "preparatoria" (college prep high school), there will not be any of the "festivals" that they have in junior high.
