The Bullfight Controversy

One of the most controversial traditions which the Spanish brought to the New World is bullfighting.  Animal rights activists in many Hispanic countries have fought to criminalize the "fiesta brava", as it is known in Spanish.  It is outlawed in numerous nations, parts of Spain, and in several states in Mexico.

The world's largest bullring is the Plaza México in Mexico City.

In 2022, a local court ruled that bullfighting at Plaza México be suspended.  However, last December the Supreme Court of Mexico revoked that suspension pending further study of the merits of the case.  On January 28th, the first bullfight in a year and a half took place.  The ring was jammed with cheering spectators, but outside a group of around 300 activists protested the event.

Last week, one of my walks took me past the Plaza México, and the spray-painted slogans of the protestors still covered the walls of the ring.

In 2024 they murder in public spaces and the government supports it.

"Murderers"
But the protester had a problem with spelling and added a syllable.
The correct spelling is "asesinos".

It is not art.
Murderers

On the sidewalk, a threat of violence from one of those protesting the cruelty of the "fiesta brava".
"Death to the bullfighter"
