Pedro, Alejandro's dad, celebrated his birthday last weekend. Alejandro and I stopped at a bakery on the way from the apartment to the family's house to buy a cake. We bought a baklava cake again... slices of baklava on top of a cheesecake. It's something quite unique that we have never seen at any other bakery. We really like it, and it has almost become a tradition for birthday celebrations among us.
I didn't know what to get Pedro for his birthday, so I suggested that we go out for dinner at El Cardenal the next day. When Alejandro and I got married last February, we all went to El Cardenal after the ceremony. Pedro really liked the restaurant. So, even though he doesn't leave the house much anymore, it didn't take much effort to talk him into dinner at El Cardenal.
At first, he was going to order "romeritos", a type of Mexican green that is served in "mole". I was happy when the waiter said that they were out of "romeritos". It was the cheapest entree on the menu, and I had hoped that he would have something more special for his birthday dinner. He ended up ordering "bacalao a la veracruzana", Veracruz style cod. He ate every bite. The waiter joked with him, "I guess you didn't like it." Pedro even ordered dessert... "pan de elote"... a type of corn bread, but sweeter and moister than most corn breads in the U.S.
We all had a very good dinner, and Pedro was treated to a double birthday celebration.
What a lovely double birthday!
ReplyDeleteI think Pedro had a very good time.
