Since 2018 the Bank of Mexico has been introducing new designs for the nation's currency. Last weekend when we were downtown, I noticed two large banners hanging from the Bank of Mexico building announcing that the new 50 peso bills are now in circulation.
This new design continues the theme which has been established with the previous banknotes. The front honors the country's historical identity while the back portrays its natural ecosystems. In this case the front recalls Mexico's pre-Hispanic past with a fragment of an Aztec carving showing an eagle perched on a cactus. (According to legend it was the omen that announced where the Aztecs should establish their settlement... the settlement which eventually became Mexico City.) On the back of the bill there is scene of the waterways of Xochimilco in the southern part of Mexico City and the endangered amphibian, the axolotl, that inhabits those canals.

The circulation of the new bills began the end of October, but it will be a while before I see one, perhaps not until my next trip to Mexico.
