The Day of the Dead is over and done with. Time to put away the "ofrendas" and start thinking about Christmas. In front of the Mexico City World Trade Center the "Mexicráneos" are gone, and on November 3rd Krispy Kreme began setting up a large Christmas tree. Of course the decorations include giant donuts.
Next weekend the Christmas shopping season begins in earnest. It will be a three-day weekend (what the Mexicans call a "puente"... a bridge) because Revolution Day is celebrated on the third Monday of November. That three-day weekend is called "el Buen Fin" (the Good Weekend). It was inspired by "Black Friday" in the U.S., and stores will be offering special sales. This annual shopping spree was begun ten years ago as a way to stimulate the economy. However critics argue that it has simply pushed the Mexican consumer into credit card debt.
