A Three-Day Weekend

Many Mexicans are enjoying a three-day holiday this weekend.  Today is Revolution Day, a day commemorating the beginning of the Mexican Revolution which overthrew the dictator Porfirio Díaz in 1910.  The actual date was November 20th, but a federal law changed in 2006 the observance to the third Monday of November.

Alejandro's sister and nephew took advantage of the day off from work and school and took a trip to León, in the state of Guanajuato, to visit cousins.  We got up very early in the morning to take them to the "Terminal de Autobuses del Norte" (Bus Station of the North) to catch their first class bus leaving at 6:15 A.M. for the five hour journey north to León.  (First class buses in Mexico are far superior to any bus service we have in the United States.)  Even at that early hour the bus station was packed with people taking advantage of the three-day weekend to travel.  We will pick them up early this evening when they return.

Their trip coincided with an annual event held this time of year in León... the León International Balloon Festival.  More than 200 hot air balloons from 15 countries participate in this event.  It is the largest balloon event in Latin America and is ranked as one of the top three balloon events in the world.  Alejandro's sister sent some photos and videos of the festival.  Here are a couple...
