Skulls and Flowers

Last Sunday, after visiting the Halloween Bazaar, Alejandro and I walked down Paseo de la Reforma because there was much more we wanted to see during this holiday season.

In the past the Mexicráneos would be on display along the boulevard.  The Mexicráneos are large fiberglass skulls.  Each one is painted with a different design, each by a different artist.  The last few years the skulls have been on display in Parque Bicentenario instead of along Reforma.  This year there were a few of the Mexicráneos, some of them from past years, but a few of them new for 2024.

Another event that has been held along the Paseo de la Reforma for the past several years is "The Festival of Marigolds."

Alejandro, standing next to the gate, is by an image of an axolotl, the endangered salamander-like animal which lives in the canals of Xochimilco.

Nursery owners from the Mexico City area, especially Xochimilco, participate in this festival.  They have a variety of flowers and houseplants for sale.

But of course, being the Day of the Dead season, and as the name of the festival implies, the principal flower here is the marigold.  Many people come here to buy the potted marigolds that they will place on their "ofrendas".

There were also several stands selling seasonal handicrafts... and you know what a sucker I am for handicrafts!

I bought one of these little ceramic pumpkins.

Yes, I am guilty of mixing a bit of Halloween with my Day of the Dead decor.

This fellow makes nice decorative items out of wood.

I bought the "catrina" figure in the center.

 

There was still more to see along Paseo de la Reforma during this festive season.
