On Saturday afternoon, after watching the Alebrije Parade, Alejandro and I walked around the downtown area. It was very evident that the Day of the Dead was around the corner.
This van, converted into an ice-cream truck, was parked along a side street and was attracting a lot a customers after the parade.
"La Michoacana" is a chain of ice cream shops in Mexico. This van, probably not affiliated with the chain, called itself "La Michoacanita Viajera" (The Traveling Little Michoacana).
On top of the van are figures of Miguel and his dog Dante, characters from the Disney movie "Coco".
We stopped at a branch of "Cielito Querido", a chain of coffee shops. There was an "ofrenda" (a Day of the Dead altar in honor of the departed) set up in the shop.
It included photos of famous Mexicans (here you see pictures of painter Frida Kahlo and singer / movie star Pedro Infante)... and a variety of their coffee products.
In front of our favorite restaurant, Testal, there were a life-size "catrina" and her mariachi "catrín" (elegantly dressed skeletons).
At the "La Ideal" bakery, the window was filled with sugar skulls. In the days before photographs were common, the names of departed loved ones would be written on the skulls and placed on the "ofrenda".
At "Nuevo Mundo", a department store and fabric shop, seasonal fabrics for making Day of the Dead tablecloths are on display.
A couple of stores along Madero Street were already elaborately decorated for Day of the Dead.
