A Political Assembly

Part of the World Trade Center complex is the Pepsi Center, a venue for concerts and other events.  Last Saturday evening, as we passed by, we could see that they were preparing for something.  We figured that there was a concert scheduled for the next day.

Sunday morning, as we headed out for breakfast, there was definitely something going on, and it was not a concert.  There were buses from different states of Mexico parked near the World Trade Center, and we could hear drums beating.

When we reached the Pepsi Center, we saw a large crowd gathered outside.  There were stilt walkers and drummers.  Some people were waving flags, and many wore red jackets with the logo of the political party PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional).  PRI for decades had a stranglehold on Mexican politics, but now it's not even a third-rate party.  Its existence depends on forming coalitions with other parties.

Alejandro took some photos of the gathering with his phone.

As we later found out, the gathering was PRI's national assembly.  In spite of the festive atmosphere before the meeting, it was quite an acrimonious event.  The leader of the party, Alejandro Moreno was seeking a change in party rules so that he could be reelected and serve until 2032.  Moreno's term as leader has been marked by numerous scandals, and some delegates opposed his reelection.  However, the party rules were changed, and Moreno was reelected with 97% of the vote.
