"Reyes" Is Here

Today is Epiphany, or, as it is known in Mexico, "Día de los Reyes" (Day of the Kings).  Today is the day when children traditionally receive gifts from the Magi Kings.  It is also the culmination of what Mexicans refer to as "Guadalupe-Reyes", the marathon of festivities that stretch from the Feast Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe (December 12th) until the Day of the Kings.  After this weekend life returns to normal in Mexico.

Here are some photos taken during the days leading up to "Reyes"...

A shop (which sells very expensive t-shirts) had three mannequins in the window garbed in capes and crowns.

An advertisement from the ubiquitous restaurant / gift shop chain, Sanborns, wishes everyone a happy Kings' Day.

"Fonart", the government sponsored chain of handicraft shops, was offering a 15% discount on all toys through this weekend.

An integral part of the celebration is the "rosca de los Reyes", a ring-shaped pastry that is served on this day.  Everywhere you can find the "roscas" for sale, and today you will constantly see people carrying the large boxes home with them.

Just inside the door of this bakery in Condesa you can see the boxes of "roscas" piled high.

At a restaurant where I had breakfast yesterday, a table was filled with "roscas" for sale.

And Walmart's bakery department had plenty of "roscas".

This evening, I will be partaking of the "rosca" with Alejandro's family on the final night of the Christmas season.
