A Disgrace

As much as I love Mexico, I find the amount of violence against women in this country to be a national disgrace.  And even more disgraceful is the fact that very rarely are the perpetrators of these crimes brought to justice.

When I was at the Zócalo last week the barricades in front of the National Palace were covered with signs protesting yet another crime.

This sign tells the sad story in a nutshell...

"Imagine going out to celebrate your last day of high school and not returning."

Sofía Morales, 17 years old, was a good student at a preparatory school in Mexico City.  She had plans to study art next fall at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.  She and a group of friends went out to a bar to celebrate the last day of classes.  Her drink and the drink of a friend were poisoned.  They both collapsed and were taken to a hospital.  Sofía was dead upon arrival.  Her friend was in grave condition but is now out of danger.  The police are investigating Sofía's death as a femicide.

It is crimes such as this which have led to increased militancy among Mexican feminists.  However the President brushes them off as pawns of his opposition, and their protests as attempts to discredit his administration.
