Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

It seems as if it were only yesterday that I was writing on this blog about my spring gardening.  But now it is autumn.  The leaves on the trees are just beginning to turn color.  We have not yet had a frost; in fact, for the most part we have had glorious autumn weather with sunny days and mild temperatures.

Nevertheless, most of the perennials are done blooming and are looking rather ragged.  At this point in the year I have not been spraying my plants with repellant, so the deer have been feasting on the hostas, leaving nothing but the stems.  I'll just let them enjoy their "salad bar" while it lasts.

The time has come to clear out the flower beds.  I have begun chopping down the perennials.  The garden is starting to look empty and barren. I need to complete the autumn tasks by the end of the month since I will leave for Mexico at the beginning of November.

But it will probably seem like the blink of the eye before I am once again out there doing my spring gardening!

  1. Wow, you don't have a very long blooming season, do you?

    1. Actually, some of the plants, especially the annuals, are still blooming, and will continue to bloom until we have a frost. But most of the perennials are done. A few of my perennials are autumn bloomers, and I will chop those down last. Since I am leaving in 3 weeks, I need to get started on clearing out the flower beds.

  2. Summer here is definitely over. I've put away two air conditioners, and turned on the heat a couple of weeks ago. I realize I'm a bit of a friolero when it comes to interior heat, but I figure I might as well be comfortable in the house. And it doesn't require that much energy to heat the house ten or fifteen degrees warmer than outside.

And today I did my first leaf blowing/raking, mostly prematurely fallen green leaves, but with a few yellow and red ones mixed in. And the horrors of the maple seeds are beginning again, not to mention the heavy rain of acorns.

I love having a garden, but I really resent the amount of time it takes. It's times like these when I fantasize about a Mexican house with a patio and a roof deck, with all the plants under control in talavera pots.

    1. Here in Ohio we had a couple days where I turned up the thermostat. But then the temperatures turned milder... supposed to be in the 70s today and tomorrow. Later this week however the temperature is supposed to plummet.

I don't think we are going to have spectacular fall foliage this year... but perhaps it's still to early to tell.

As I get older, the gardening is becoming more like work instead of play... but it is great exercise.

      Saludos,
      Bill
