A Respite from "Mole"

As wonderful as Oaxacan cuisine is, after a week we have had a bit too much of a good thing.  We have reached the point where we need to take a break from those heavy, rich "moles"...  in fact our battle of the "moles"  (who can try the most different sauces) may have been suspended.

I know this is absolute heresy in a culinary capital like Oaxaca, but two nights ago we went to a nearby VIPs, a Mexican chain comparable to our Denny's.   Last night, we went to "El Fogoncito", a franchise chain of modernized, spiffed up taco joints... again heresy to those purists who extol the virtues of the hole-in-the-wall "taquería" or taco stand on the street.  "El Fogoncito" probably doesn't have the greatest tacos in Mexico, but they were tasty and the portions were bigger than what we expected.  (So much for the idea of a light evening snack.)

Taco Bell, eat your heart out!!

  1. Never have heard of the taco place, which doesn't matter and Vips, hmmmm. There are many "light fare" restaurants in Oaxaca. Would you like for me to send you the names of a few? A little mole goes a looooooooong way, ha.

    1. Part of the reason we went to VIPs was because it is close to our apartment. We just didn't feel like walking to the "centro". It actually wasn't bad. We had a yummy dessert... we had crepes filled with cream cheese and covered with blackberries. It was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that was the best we have ever tasted. I'd go back there just to ask for some more vanilla ice cream!

  2. VIPs!?! ¡Ay Guey! But from the above response, it seems you are unrepentant.

    1. Yes, I'm totally unrepentant!! LOL In fact we went back there last night for vanilla ice cream with blackberry sauce.
I was talking with Alejandro on the phone this afternoon, and I told him that you had scolded me for going to VIPs, and he said that one's stomach can't take all this rich, traditional food day after day. (The two of us have been known to eat at VIPs in DF on occasion when we have been having too much of a good thing.)
