Yesterday, as Alejandro was driving me from the airport to his house, there was an interesting segment on the talk show that was on the radio. They were discussing the name José, the Spanish for Joseph. The nickname for José is Pepe. Unlike Joe for Joseph, the Spanish nickname bears absolutely no resemblance at all to the proper name. So, what was the origin of the name Pepe?
In numerous Latin texts, St. Joseph is referred to as "Sanctus Josefus Pater Putativo Christi" (St. Joseph, Putative Father of Christ). "Pater Putativo" was often abbreviated to "P.P." In the Spanish language the letter "P" is "Pe" (pronounced "pay"), and so you get the name Pepe.
A bit of trivia that I never knew.
