On Saturday morning, Alejandro and I were going to go out for breakfast. Just a couple blocks away from my apartment is one of our favorite places, "El Cardenal". However, usually on weekends there is a long line waiting for a table, and we were planning on going elsewhere. But as we passed the place, we were surprised to see that there was no line and that there were several unoccupied tables outside. So, we changed our plan. We were immediately seated at "El Cardenal". We got there just in time, because moments later the other outdoor tables were taken, and a line began to form.
We always start a breakfast at "El Cardenal" with Mexican hot chocolate and a freshly baked "pan dulce" (pastry) from the tray which the waiter brings around. Since this is the season, we both selected "pan de muerto" (bread of the dead).
There were several new items on the menu. Alejandro ordered "huevos rancheros" (eggs served on top of a tortilla). "Huevos rancheros" is a very common breakfast dish, but this was a somewhat different variation, since the eggs were covered with a spicy green salsa which they called "tierra caliente" (hot land). Afterwards I looked up the "tierra caliente" salsa on the internet, and, although I did not find the exact sauce that we had, it would appear that it comes from the tropical, coastal regions of the state of Michoacán.
I ordered enchiladas, also served with the "tierra caliente" sauce.
As always, it was a hearty and delicious breakfast that carried us through the day.
