Mexico got a double hit from Hurricane Grace. Last Thursday it hit the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula as a Category 1 hurricane. As it crossed the peninsula it quickly weakened into a tropical storm. Once it was over the Gulf of Campeche (as the southern part of the Gulf of Mexico is known) it quickly intensified again to began a Category 3 hurricane. After crossing the gulf, it made a second landfall along the coast of the Mexican state of Veracruz early Saturday morning. The heavy rains caused flooding and mudslides. At least eight fatalities have been reported in the state, most of them in the capital of Jalapa.
As the storm crossed the rugged terrain of the Mexican interior, it quickly degraded. The forecast for Mexico City called for heavy rain and wind on Saturday. However all we got here was a chilly morinng with steady light rain. There was not even any wind.
Alejandro and I wanted to get out of the apartment because it was the cleaning lady's day to come. So we walked over to a nearby shopping mall, spent a few hours window shopping and even buying a few things.
By the time we left the mall, the rain was nothing more than a drizzle, and by the time we reached the apartment it had stopped. The sky was brightening, there were a few patches of blue sky, and a couple hints of sunshine.
So that was our experience with Hurricane Grace. There was talk that the system would cross Mexico, reach the Pacific coast, gain strength and become a tropical storm once again. But given how quickly the storm fizzled out over land, I am doubtful of that.
Glad all you had was drizzle and no heavy rain. Pretty much the same here except we had no sunshine until today, Sunday.........
ReplyDeleteThe sun that we had yesterday was what the British would call "a peek of sun". We had a sunny morning today here in CDMX, but now it is cloudy and looks like rain.
