Earlier this week I celebrated my birthday at Alejandro's home. The morning of my birthday I saw a big box from a "pastelería" (pastry shop) in the refrigerator. Obviously Alejandro had stopped to buy it that morning after driving his sister to work.
The cake was from a place called "El Universal" which is located not far where his sister works. It is now our favorite "pastelería". It was the same kind of cake as the one we bought in April for Alejandro's birthday. It is called "Mil Hojas" (1000 Layers). It's a little bit like strudel in that there are many layers of thin dough. In between there is a cream filling. It is very delicious.
That evening at supper time, the cake was brought out.
The traditional birthday song of "Las Mañanitas" was sung. However, there is one tradition that is no longer observed, at least not in Alejandro's family. One small silver lining to the pandemic is that the birthday boy's face is no longer pushed into the cake.
That was a lotta cake! I hope you enjoyed it and your birthday celebration, too!
