Here are more Mexican Nativity scenes from the excellent exhibition now going on at the Palace of Iturbide...
Dolls from the State of Mexico
A scene carved from cow's bone from Ciudad Nezahualcoyotl on the outskirts of Mexico City
Obsidian figures from Guadalajara
Clay figures from Metepec in the State of Mexico
Notice the devil and the angel fighting on top of the stable.
A Nativity scene carved from stone from the state of Yucatán
These magnificently realistic figures from Salamanca in the state of Guanajuato are made from wax.
These figures are also made of wax, but they are from the village of Purépero in the state of Michoacán. Notice how they are all wearing traditional garments from that region.
Granite carvings from Taxco in the state of Guerrero
This Nativity is made from the fibers of the "zacatón" plant that grows on the volcanic slopes of central Mexico. It was made by an artist in the city of Puebla.
Two scenes made of clay from Tonalá, Jalisco
This elaborate scene is the creation of Guillermina Aguilar, a well-known artist from Ocotlán in Oaxaca. (On one of my trips to Oaxaca I visited her workshop.)
Paintings on "amate" paper (paper made from tree bark) is a specialty of the state of Guerrero.
